Papers 1923-1996

The Laurie L. Brown Papers, 1923-1996, consist of 3.5 cubic feet of material documenting Dr. Brown's interest in medicine, history and community life. The collection is arranged in four series: correspondence, personal, professional, and topical. Correspondence files include materials to and from Dr. Brown with other MUSC faculty and physicians, as well as letters to editors of various newspapers and journal, and politicians. There is a significant amount of correspondence about recommendations for jobs at MUSC and elsewhere. The personal series documents his childhood, education, pre-medical employment, medical school education, and naval service during World War II. The professional series consists of Brown's files about research on the drug Brevatonal, and his involvement with the American Board of Anesthesiology, American Society of Anesthesiology, South Carolina Society of Anesthesiologists, Waring Library Society and the Robert Wilson Medical History Club. The topical series is the largest series and consists of research notes and files about anesthesiology, medical history, military history and medicine, civil rights and segregation, socialized medicine and Medicare, nuclear war, polio, and Rh factor in pregnancy, among many others. Also included in the collection are Dr. Brown's graduation ceremony cap and gown.

Laurie Lanham Brown was born on December 9, 1923 in Paxville, South Carolina to James Nelson and Mary Martha Bell Brown. A graduate of the College of Charleston, he later worked for Standard Oil Company in Columbia, SC while attending business school at night. In 1943, he enlisted with the Navy and served in the North Atlantic and Mediterranean Sea during World War II.
